Technical Assistant in Tumor Immunology

Technical Assistant in Tumor Immunology

The Maier laboratory at CeMM, the Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, is recruiting a highly motivated Technical Assistant to join an international team of scientists working in the field of tumor immunology / cancer immunotherapy. In your role as Technical Assistant you will be involved in setting up the laboratory, you will be responsible for the lab organization and you will contribute with your lab work to the success of the Maier research group at CeMM.

Your tasks in this position:

  • Isolation of primary immune cells from different tissues (mouse, human)
  • Immune cell functional assays, such as antigen-specific T cell priming/activation/exhaustion assays
  • Phenotyping of immune cells using multicolor flow cytometry and mass cytometry
  • Mouse models of lung cancer and other cancers
  • Molecular biology, such as cloning or preparation of next-generation sequencing libraries
  • Organization of laboratory space, ordering of laboratory consumables

The Candidate:

  • Degree in life sciences (B.Sc., M.Sc., Mag., DI)
  • Eager to join a young team and be trained in new techniques and science of tumor immunology
  • Qualified laboratory experience in molecular and cellular biology and/or immunology
  • Experience with cell culture and/or mouse handling is a plus
  • Experience with basic molecular biology (e.g. cloning and PCR)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • High accuracy and reliability, able to work seamlessly in a team
  • Excellent communication skills and organizational skills

The Lab:

The Lab of Barbara Maier investigates how solid tumors evade the immune system; what local factors in the tumor microenvironment dampen the activity of immune cells; and how immune cells can be reprogrammed to mount an efficient immune response against tumors. We combine cell-culture based high throughput technologies, mechanistic in vivo studies, single-cell transcriptomics, and immune-profiling of patient-derived tumor material.

The Position:

Our team is looking for a passionate young scientist to join as Technical Assistant to help develop a platform for functional immune cell assays that model the tumor microenvironment using immune cells from tumor-bearing mice or from cancer patients. The successful candidate will become an expert in cell-culture based assays assessing immune cell interactions and phenotypes, as well as in mouse models of lung cancer. After receiving the appropriate training, the new Technical Assistant will independently carry out experiments using mouse tumor models and cell culture-based techniques. In addition, the new group member will be a part of individual as well as group meetings to deepen their understanding of the background and current scientific directions in the field of tumor immunology and cancer immunotherapy.

The Institute:

CeMM is a unique biomedical institute in the heart of Vienna, Austria. We are committed to highest scientific standards and provide an international environment representing more than 45 nationalities. The working language is English. In the past 3 years CeMM groups published numerous ground-breaking studies in prestigious journals such as Science, Cell, Nature, New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Immunology, Immunity etc. CeMM is located on the medical campus of Vienna and operates several cutting-edge technology platforms (chemical biological screening, proteomics, metabolomics, next-generation sequencing) as well as extensive bioinformatics infrastructure. CeMM aims to promote equality of opportunity for all with the right mix of talent, competences and potential. We welcome applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds.

The Offer:

We offer a challenging position in a meaningful, inspiring, international setting, with an excellent work climate and the possibility to join our social (cultural or sports) activities.
